At the age of 21 Eisenhower, who was a gifted student when he concentrated on his work, won a merit scholarship to West Point in New York in a competitive exam. He did not, at that point, have strong military ambitions, but West Point was attractive because it offered a free, high-quality technical education to young men unable to afford private college fees. He was a talented and enthusiastic football player and soon became a West Point star. He was devastated when a knee injury ended his playing career. Eisenhower studied the traditional curriculum, a blend of military history, English composition, mathematics, and army technology. He graduated from West Point in 1915, popular among his fellow cadets but without a strong academic record.
