Dwight D. Eisenhower, a small town Kansas boy, became a football star at West Point then rose through the ranks of the army, becoming the United States's supreme commander in World War II (1939–45) Europe. Shrewd, genial, hardworking, and a brilliant organizer, he based his successful political career on the appearance of being unconcerned about politics.
