In 1929 after announcing that he would not seek a third term and passing the reins to his successor Herbert Hoover, Calvin and Grace Coolidge returned to their home in Northampton, Massachusetts. During his retirement Coolidge wrote his autobiography, The Autobiography of Calvin Coolidge, and published articles in some of the popular magazines of the day in which he reiterated his philosophy of limited government. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Amherst College and the New York Life Insurance Society. Grace Coolidge resumed her activities in the local Congregational Church and her work for the Red Cross and other community organizations. The Great Depression that began in late 1929, as well as President Hoover's defeat in the 1932 presidential election by Franklin D. Roosevelt, caused Coolidge much distress.
