In 1905, at the age of 33, Coolidge married Grace Anna Goodhue, a graduate of the University of Vermont and a teacher at a school for deaf children. The couple had two children, John and Calvin Jr. Calvin died in 1924 at the age of 16 after developing a blister on his foot while playing tennis at the White House, which progressed into blood poisoning. Many observers felt that President Coolidge never overcame this loss. Indeed, in his autobiography Coolidge wrote: "When he [Calvin, Jr.] went, the power and the glory of the presidency went with him. I do not know why such a price was exacted for occupying the White House."Grace Coolidge's personality was the direct opposite of her husband's.
