Coolidge attended the local elementary school in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, and then the Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vermont, beginning in 1887. He briefly attended St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, in order to qualify for admittance to Amherst College. In 1891 he began undergraduate study at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Coolidge was very much a loner. He was shy, quiet, and spent much of his time studying during his first years at the college, though he did join the Amherst Republican club. His favorite areas of study were French and Italian, political science, philosophy, and modern history. Coolidge's grades were good, and he eventually graduated cum laude. Somewhat oddly given his quiet demeanor, Coolidge developed into an excellent public speaker.
