Coolidge and the Judiciary
President Coolidge made one appointment to the Supreme Court during his tenure in office, Harlan Fiske Stone. Stone had been dean of the Columbia University Law School and was serving as U.S. attorney general at the time of his appointment. He served as an associate justice of the nation's highest court between 1925 and 1941. President Franklin D. Roosevelt elevated him to the position of chief justice in 1941, a position he held until his death in 1946.
