Coolidge and Congress
The Republican Party had majority control of both houses of Congress throughout President Coolidge's time as the nation's chief executive. This included the Sixty-eighth Congress that had been elected while Harding was president and the Sixty-ninth and Seventieth Congresses that were chosen in 1924 and 1926 respectively.
The fact that the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress throughout the Coolidge years is somewhat misleading, however. It suggests more unity among Republicans than was actually present. This was especially true during the period when Coolidge served out the unexpired term of Warren Harding. The divisions in the party between old guard conservatives and progressives were very strong.
