The Calvin Coolidge Administrations
Calvin Coolidge was a popular president who held office during a carefree time of growing national prosperity. He brought to the presidential office the characteristics of his small town New England background—thrift, honesty, and integrity. The people of the United States appreciated these qualities in the wake of the unfolding scandals of the Harding years. Coolidge saw only a limited role for government in the U.S. economy. His policies of cutting taxes and maintaining tight control over government spending were especially popular with U.S. business. In 1927 Coolidge suddenly announced that he would not run for reelection as president in 1928. At the time he provided no explanation for his decision.
