Republican Party leaders were confident that the Coolidge-Dawes ticket would be reelected in the 1928 presidential election. The nation was at peace, its economy strong, and wealth was increasing at an unheard-of pace. Then on August 2, 1927—the fourth anniversary of his succession to the presidency—Coolidge made a short statement to the press reporters who were called to a meeting at the president's summer office in the Black Hills of South Dakota: "I do not choose to run for president in nineteen twenty-eight." Not even his wife knew of his intention, and Coolidge never gave a clear explanation for his decision.
