Calvin Coolidge followed in his father's footsteps by becoming active in local Republican Party politics. His republicanism was never in doubt. Coolidge had grown up in a Republican household in a state—Vermont—that was then strongly Republican. He had later moved to Massachusetts, a state that was also controlled by the Republican Party at the turn of the twentieth century. As a result, his political philosophy closely mirrored the generally conservative ideas of the Republican Party in his area of the country.

Coolidge was a member of the Northampton City Council in 1899 and 1900, after which the council appointed him city solicitor. He held that position for two years and then briefly served as clerk of the courts in Hampshire County, Massachusetts. In 1904 Coolidge was chosen to head the local Republican Party organization.
