Post-presidential Years

After completing his second term and retiring from politics in 1897, Cleveland settled in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1899 Princeton University appointed him Henry Stafford Little Lecturer in Public Affairs. Later he served on Princeton's board of trustees when future U.S. president Woodrow Wilson was president of Princeton. Between 1900 and 1906 he wrote several articles for the Saturday Evening Post. In 1906 he became involved as a consultant in the reorganization of the Equitable Life Assurance Society. Fittingly, Cleveland's last words were, "I have tried so hard to do right." On June 24, 1908, at 8:40 P.M. he died of heart failure at his Princeton home.
