When he was 11 years old, Cleveland was enrolled in the Fayetteville Academy in Fayetteville, New York. Soon his family moved to Clinton, New York, and from 1850 to 1851 Cleveland studied Latin and mathematics at the Clinton Liberal Institute. He dreamed of attending college, but when his father died in 1853 Cleveland began working to help support his large family. Somewhat later while living in Buffalo, New York, he studied law while he was associated with Rogers, Bowen, and Rogers, one of the leading law firms in Buffalo. In 1859 he officially became a lawyer when he was admitted to the bar.
