Early Life

Grover Cleveland grew up with few privileges. The son of a Presbyterian pastor who moved from church to church, Cleveland was born in 1837 in Caldwell, New Jersey. His parents named him after a family friend, Rev. Stephen Grover, who had faithfully served the Caldwell church for nearly 50 years before Grover's father succeeded him.

Born in the manse (the pastor's house) in Caldwell, Grover Cleveland was the fifth child in a family that eventually grew to nine children. His parents moved to Fayetteville, New York, in 1841. In 1851 the Clevelands moved to Clinton, New York, where Cleveland's father became director of the American Home Missionary Society. In 1853, shortly after Rev. Richard Cleveland was appointed pastor of a church in Holland Patent, New York, he died. This death ended any hopes that Cleveland had for more formal education.
