First Term Congresses

In his first administration, Cleveland presided over the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth sessions of Congress. In the Forty-ninth session the Republicans controlled the Senate 42 to 34, while the Democrats had a majority in the House of Representatives of 182 to 141 (with two representatives from third parties). In the Fiftieth session the majorities were more slender. There were 39 Republicans and 37 Democrats in the Senate, and in the House 167 Democrats sat with 152 Republicans along with six third-party representatives.
