The United States remained in the grips of depression when Cleveland's second term came to a close. In fact, his own party, the Democratic Party, nominated William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska for president in 1896. Bryan, also the candidate of the Populist Party that year, advocated free and unlimited coinage of silver, which to a gold Democrat like Cleveland was anathema. Although Bryan campaigned vigorously, the U.S. people elected Republican Party candidate William McKinley as their president. Grover Cleveland returned to private life where he continued to take interest in U.S. politics although never running for public office again.
