Carter married Rosalynn Smith on July 7, 1946. Rosalynn Carter also grew up in Plains, Georgia, and began dating Carter while he was home on leave from Annapolis in 1945. The two married soon after Carter's graduation from Annapolis. The couple had four children.

They moved to Norfolk, Virginia, for Carter's first tour of duty. For the next six years, they lived up and down the eastern seaboard. When Carter's father died in 1953, he decided to resign his commission and return to run the family peanut business. Rosalynn Carter, who enjoyed living away from Plains, first opposed Carter's decision. After their return, however, she kept the books and provided invaluable help in expanding the family operations into a million dollar business.

Rosalynn Carter also brought the same involvement to her husband's career in politics. She was a strong voice in Carter's political decision making from early in his career....
