When Jimmy Carter lost the 1980 election, interest rates were soaring, Soviet troops were in Afghanistan, and 52 U.S. hostages were scattered throughout Iran. Carter's idealism and his long-term visions for the country, it seemed, were ultimately defeated by the widespread perception that his presidency, at least in the short term, had been a failure.

Popularity and Public Opinion

One of the great weaknesses of Carter's presidency was his inability to communicate with the press and with the public. Unlike his successor Ronald Reagan, Carter could not connect with the public, because of his unwillingness to simplify his message and because of a speaking style that was not particularly forceful or television-friendly.
