Career
Carter served in the navy from 1946 to 1953, working first as an electronics instructor and then attending submarine school in 1948 in New London, Connecticut. In 1951 he joined the nuclear-powered submarine program, studying nuclear physics at Union College in Schenectady, New York. He was then chosen by Adm. Hyman Rickover to serve as engineering officer aboard the Sea Wolf, one of the nation's early nuclear submarines. Rickover's drive and diligence greatly inspired the young Carter, who vowed to work as hard in his pursuits as did his mentor. Working as an engineer for Rickover, Carter came to believe that he could solve even the most intractable problems through hard work and intelligent thinking. This conviction would have a distinct effect on his approach to politics in later years.
