In retirement Bush kept a relatively low profile, muting his criticism of the Clinton administration and making occasional public appearances. In November 1997 he attended the dedication of the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on the campus of Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas.

Bush also quietly supported the political careers of his sons, George and Jeb, both Republicans. Both ran for governorships in 1994, with George winning in Texas and Jeb losing a close race in Florida. In 1998 Jeb ran in Florida again and this time was successful, while George was reelected to a second term in Texas. George's background and strong showings in the state of Texas brought him national attention. He declared his intentions to seek the Republican Party's 1999 presidential nomination.
