Bush met Barbara Pierce, then a student at Smith College, at a Christmas dance in Greenwich, Connecticut, in 1942, while he was on leave from the U.S. Navy. She left Smith during her sophomore year, and the two married in Rye, New York, on January 6, 1945. Throughout Bush's career, Barbara Bush volunteered for a variety of causes including improving adult literacy, increasing breast cancer awareness, and improving education. Many Americans admired her direct style and her straightforward demeanor. Despite a reputation for independence and strong opinions, she disagreed publicly with her husband only on two occasions—in 1989, when she supported a ban on assault weapons that her husband opposed, and in 1992, when the Republican Party included a strict antiabortion plank in its convention platform.
