Early Life
Buchanan was born on a farm near Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. His father, James Buchanan, Sr., a merchant and farmer, emigrated from County Donegal, Ireland, to the United States in 1783. In 1788 Buchanan, Sr., married Elizabeth Speer, a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The couple had eight children. When James Buchanan, Jr. was five years old, the family moved the five miles from their log cabin at Cove Gap, Pennsylvania, to Mercersburg, where Buchanan spent the remainder of his childhood.
