Changes in the U.S. Government

Under Harrison six states were admitted into the Union in 1889 and 1890. Harrison favored statehood for all six states, although he was active on behalf of only North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Montana. Wyoming and Idaho secured their entry into the Union through constitutional conventions. Harrison also issued the proclamation that opened the land rush (or "Harrison's Horse Race") into the unassigned lands of modern-day western Oklahoma in 1889, although that state's entry into the Union would not occur for nearly another 20 years.
