After leaving the White House in 1885, Arthur resumed practicing law but was able to do very little because of poor health. As president Arthur knew that he was suffering from Bright's disease (a kidney ailment which, at that time, was fatal). Arthur's health steadily deteriorated, and his last public appearance was at a retirement dinner for a friend in December 1885. On November 17, 1886, Arthur suffered a paralyzing stroke and, without regaining consciousness, died the next day on November 18, 1886.
