Education

Arthur's education began at home where he was tutored by his scholarly father. He then attended an academy in Union Village, New York, for a short time before enrolling at the Lyceum in Schenectady, New York. There he became editor of the school newspaper and got his first taste of politics when he joined other students at rallies to support Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky, the renowned legislator and statesman, for president. He entered Union College in Schenectady in 1845 and graduated in the top third of his class in 1848. He taught school while studying law and was admitted to the bar in 1854.
