Early Life
Chester Arthur was born on October 5, 1829, in North Fairfield, Vermont, to William Arthur and the former Malvina Stone. Arthur's father was a Baptist minister whose work made it necessary for the family to move several times during Arthur's youth. Arthur was the fifth of nine children. The large family and frequent moves helped Arthur to develop his outgoing and friendly personality.
