A career politician with a background in machine politics, Chester A. Arthur succeeded to the presidency after the assassination of President James Garfield. As president Arthur sought to govern in accordance with the best interests of the American people, even when they were against the interests of the powerful politicians and political systems that he had long been associated with. In doing so, Arthur turned out to be a much better president than anyone expected.
