Andrew Johnson met Eliza McCardle soon after arriving in Greeneville, Tennessee. They quickly grew to love each other and married on May 17, 1827. They would have a long marriage that produced five children: Martha, Charles, Mary, Robert, and Andrew Jr. Throughout their marriage, Andrew and Eliza Johnson remained devoted to each other and to their home in Greeneville, Tennessee. They left it only during the American Civil War (1861–65) and during Johnson's presidency. By middle age, Eliza Johnson developed what was called "slow consumption." She became a semi-invalid and reclusive. Eliza Johnson joined her husband in Washington, D.C., after he assumed the presidency, but her health prevented her from overseeing White House social life or playing a public role in Johnson's administration. Johnson's daughter, Martha Patterson, took on the role of White House hostess as a result.
