Kay Scarpetta's personality consists of a series of ironies. She is confident in her abilities, yet cautious, fearful of error because she is aware of the treachery of politics. Although severely reserved, she tries to apprehend the pain of the victims' loved ones, and she offers them support by silent gestures such as a touch on the arm. She is able to be coldly analytical in her lab, yet she insists upon the humanity of the victims. The corpse is not a puzzle to be solved but a person to be understood.
