The characters Tashi, Olivia, and Adam appear briefly in The Color Purple and in The Temple of My Familiar (1989). Possessing the Secret of Joy, however, should not be seen as a sequel, says Walker "because it is not, I have claimed the storyteller's prerogative to recast or slightly change events alluded to or described in the earlier books."
