We just started poetry. How do you analyze the lyrics of a song and explain why or how they seem poetic? Then we have to examine which parts of a song's power come solely from the words, and which from the music or performance. Does it have to be a certain type of music or can you use anything? I have to do an essay and a presentation.  I would appreciate any helpful advice.  Thanks!

To do this, I would recommend gathering the lyrics of 3 or 4 of your favorite songs (it doesn't matter what type of music, as long as it is classroom appropriate).  Then, using a list of poetic techniques (such as imagery, similes, metaphors, personification, etc.), try to find some lyrics that use those techniques.

For example, one Foo Fighters song has lyrics that uses metaphors ("I am a street-light shining, I am a wild light blinding bright, burning off alone").  These are poetic because they use direct metaphors, and some great imagery.  The power of those lyrics are the meaning behind them, and some good discussion could be fostered from presenting them, and asking the students what they think they mean.

So, once you have found some poetic lyrics within your songs, talk about their power, meaning, and how they add depth to the song.  Then you can discuss how the music enhances that.  Good luck!  It sounds like a fun assignment!
