You might think of "The Pigman" as having several settings that are linked or interwoven. The overall setting is America, in the 1960s, while the two main characters are in high school. As a result, part of the story is set in John's home, part in Lorraine's home, and part in high school. The most vivid parts of the story, however, are set in Angelo Pignati's house, which is sort of frozen in time, a mix of domesticity and loss that still holds the image of his wife Conchetta everywhere. If you wanted a metaphor or analogy, it is like the book is set at the place where the 1960s intrude on the 1950s and earlier.
