What started out as a seemingly harmless prank call really turned out to be what changed the lives of John, Lorraine, and Mr. Pignati. If John and Lorraine had not made the prank call pretending to be people they weren't, they would never have found a friend in Mr. Pignati, but his house and possibly his life would have been saved. It can also be argued that the phone call and the events that followed gave Mr. Pignati some happiness in his life before he died because he was so depressingly lonely before he met John and Lorraine. If John and Lorraine had told the truth once they arrived at Mr. Pignati's house instead of taking his money and playing along it would have changed the whole story. It is events like the phone call and the pretending that make the story, without them there would not have been a Pigman story to tell.
