There is a relationship between Lorraine and her mother, it isn't exactly a healthy relationship but it is a real one. There is also the relationship between John and his parents, again, not a great child/parent relationship but another reality. There is also the relationship between John and Lorraine and Mr. Pignati which turns into a great relationship (one that they would want with their respective parents), they have a lot of fun, until the kids betray him. John and Lorraine eventually learn in the book how to treat people in relationships.
