The Phantom follows them without their knowing of it. Christine and Raoul speak of their plans to escape after Christine's performance the next night, and Christine voices her fears and apprehensions that when the moment would arrive, she would be unwilling or unable to flee with Raoul.
Erik, the Phantom, was born deformed. Leroux uses this information to demonstrate that even from birth and childhood, Erik had to fight for his place in society and acceptance. His own mother encourages him to wear a mask, and he becomes part of a "freak show" of sorts as a child.
Leroux's phantom is very similar to Mary Shelley's monster in Frankenstein. They both are physically unacceptable to society and after experiencing humans'...

I don't believe that Christine is wicked. Most of her actions and choices are not based on selfishness or a desire to harm others (emotionally or physically). She is simply a naive girl. Leroux characterizes her as innocent in most of the ways of the world, and I think intends for her to be a sympathetic, romantic character. She believes in the supernatural (her mysterious benefactor) and also in the romantic type of love.

The author uses the phantom as a symbol to represent the differences between what is only appearance and what is, indeed, reality. The fact that he wears a the mask is a cue to his need to be seen another way, rather than for who he is. Because of the mask, Christine can believe him to be a poor, misunderstood artist. When she sees him without a mask she is applauded and can no longer think of him as she did before. His appearance is not only...
