Known primarily as a poet, Peter Meinke has also published a collection of short stories titled The Piano Tuner (1986), which won the Flannery O’Connor Award. Two volumes of children’s verse, The Legend of Larry the Lizard (1968) and Very Seldom Animals (1970), were his earliest published poetry collections. A critical study, Howard Nemerov, appeared in 1968. Meinke also published a handbook for reading and writing poems, The Shape of Poetry: A Practical Guide to Writing Poetry, in 1999.
