Mrs. Smith and Anne have a special relationship that is not based on social standing or class issues. Their relationship is a true friendship, in which each can count on the other in hard times without judgement.

Mrs. Smith was compassionate and a source of support for Anne in the wake of Anne's mother's death.

Anne was supported of Anne when discovering her friend's illness and hardships. Each can appreciate the good qualities of each other, without needing the superficiality present in other relationships throughout the novel.

In terms of the plot, Mrs. Smith is vital in providing some much needed background information on the other characters.  She is the one to let Anne know the dealings with the younger Mr. Elliot, for example.  This helps to advance the plot towards its climax and conclusion.
