Ever eager to please, Magnus calls himself “overpromised”; he has professed loyalty to too many people, to the point that he believes that there is nothing left of and for himself. It is his narrative of his life that makes up the bulk of the novel. In it, he refers to himself in the third person, differentiating himself as writer from “Pym,” his protagonist.
