Seven out of 10 U.S. blacks still live in the 11 states of the old Confederacy, down from eight out of 10 in 1910 (see 1960).

Birth control receives public endorsement from Eleanor Roosevelt.

The world's population reaches 2.3 billion, up from nearly 2 million in 1930, with roughly 500 million in China. Eighty percent of the world still lives in agricultural villages.
