Flood waters engulf Pittsburgh March 17 as the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers rise to 34 feet above low-lying streets, the flood crests at a record 46.4 feet March 18, 74 people are killed, more than 300 injured, and 50,000 left homeless. Ice chokes the Ohio River for months. The Omnibus Flood Control Act signed into law by President Roosevelt June 22 will lead to construction of dams that will in some cases damage the environment.
The deadliest U.S. tornado since 1925 hits Tupelo, Miss., April 5, killing 216 people; Gainesville, Ga., loses 203 in a tornado that hits April 6.
