Charles "Lucky" Luciano draws a 30- to 50-year prison sentence after a New York jury convicts him of compulsory prostitution (see 1931). Authorities will release Luciano in 1946 and deport him to Italy.

Bruno Richard Hauptmann dies in the electric chair at the New Jersey State Prison in Trenton April 3. Hauptmann protests his innocence of having kidnapped and killed Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. in 1932, the evidence against him is far from conclusive, but anti-German sentiment has helped to seal his fate.

Japanese authorities arrest Tokyo geisha Sada Abe, 31, May 21 on charges of having stabbed her unfaithful lover Kichizo Ishida to death in his sleep, castrating him, and carrying his penis about in her obi (sash) for 3 days while eluding police.

Convicted black rapist and murderer Rainey Bethea is hanged at Owensboro, Ky., August 14 before a crowd of 20,000 in the last state-sanctioned U.S. public execution.
