New York's Stork Club reopens with a liquor license in a five-story townhouse at 53½ East 51st Street (see 1929). A union controlled by mob boss Dutch Shultz runs Sherman Billingsley's dining room and harasses him for payoffs, but Billingsley obtains police protection, fires the employees, recruits new people, and will move next year to larger premises at 3 East 53rd Street, where his exclusive Cub Room will attract celebrities (see 1965).
