Tobacco
U.S. tobacco companies produce 123 billion cigarettes, up from fewer than 9 billion in 1910. Hollywood helps make smoking seem sophisticated as film directors have actors light up to fill awkward interludes with "business."
American Tobacco Co. runs an advertisement for its Lucky Strike cigarettes headlined, "20,679 Physicians say Luckies are less irritating."
R. J. Reynolds contracts with E. I. du Pont de Nemours in the fall for cellophane to make its Camel cigarette packs waterproof and gain an advantage over Luckies.
