The McNary-Mapes Amendment to the 1906 Food and Drug Act adopted July 8 authorizes Food & Drug Administration Standards for canned goods other than meat and poultry products. The National Canners Association has urged the move as a safety measure and to eliminate competition from shoddy goods. Pure-food reformer Harvey W. Wiley has died at Washington, D.C., June 30 at age 85.
