Explorer Delia Akeley crosses Kenya's Somali desert, battling tsetse flies and other insect pests to reach Nairobi, where she dispatches specimens of wildlife to her sponsors at the Brooklyn Museum (see 1924). She visits with Pygmies in the Ituri Forest, reaches Wamba in the Belgian Congo May 4 with photographs that she has taken of African women and children, arrives at the mouth of the Congo River on the Atlantic in September after an 11-month journey, and returns to New York with more than 30 specimens of game animals for the museum plus a wealth of adventure stories.

Col. Percy Fawcett sends a message to his wife May 29 that he is setting out on an expedition into a heretofore unexplored South American wilderness area on the border between Bolivia and Brazil (see 1906). Now 57, he disappears and will not be heard of again.
