Photography
German portrait photographer August Sander, 41, takes pictures of his countrymen to satisfy the need for photo identification cards required by Allied occupation authorities. Son of working-class people, he was given a camera in his teens, received help from his family to study painting, determined to become a photographer, began nearly a decade ago to develop an unobtrusive technique of photographing his subjects, and will create clear, realistic images that capture the essence of German life in his time.
