Philanthropy
United Way of America is founded to coordinate activities of local philanthropic fund-raising groups that include labor unions, nonprofit agencies, and governmental agencies. It will grow by the end of the century to have 23 state groups and 2,100 local groups, with headquarters at Alexandria, Virginia.
