English researcher Edward Mellanby, 34, shows that cod-liver oil contains an agent that cures rickets, giving recognition to a treatment used by North Sea mothers for generations (see McCollum, 1921).
Yale biochemists Lafayette B. Mendel and B. Cohen show that guinea pigs cannot develop vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and fall prey to scurvy even more easily than do humans (see Drummond, 1920; Szent-Györgyi, 1928).
