The Dutch Staats-General appropriates money to drain the Zuider Zee for the creation of fertile dry land. The Dutch will build dams, dykes, sluiceways, watergates, canals, and locks to "impolder" more than 800,000 acres that will increase the territory of the Netherlands by 7 percent.
An earthquake in China's Guangdong (Kwangtung) province February 13 leaves an estimated 10,000 dead.
