The Association of Lions Clubs International is founded at Dallas by Chicago insurance broker Melvin Jones to foster a spirit of "generous consideration" among the world's peoples and encourage an active interest in civic, commercial, moral, and social welfare while promoting good government and good citizenship. Less stringent in its membership rules than the Elks, Kiwanis, or other service clubs, the Lions will become larger than any of the others, with members in more than 180 countries.
