Invaders of the czar's Winter Palace at Petrograd find themselves in a building of 1,050 rooms with 117 staircases, 1,786 windows, and a 290-square foot map of Russia in emeralds, rubies, and semiprecious stones. Awed by the opulence, the soldiers and sailors leave the palace unmolested.
